Neoen is doubling the Goyder Battery in South Australia after securing two 15-year capacity contracts under the state's Firm Energy Reliability Mechanism. The developer has executed Stage 2 contracts with Tesla and engineering contractor UGL, matching the 227 MW/907 MWh first stage already in development. Together, the project is planned at 454 MW and 1,814 MWh.

"This is our 12th battery with Tesla in Australia, taking our combined capacity beyond 2GW."

The quote came from Neoen Australia Pacific chief executive Jean-Christophe Cheylus in the project announcement. It captures the larger story: this is not Tesla's first large Australian battery proving that grid storage works. It is another standardized build in a relationship that now has enough repetition to resemble an industrial program.

What 1,814 MWh means for the grid

Power and energy describe different parts of the project. The 454-MW figure is the rate at which the completed battery can discharge, while 1,814 MWh is the energy it can store. At full rated output, that works out to roughly four hours. Under the South Australian capacity contracts, each stage is listed to provide 75 MW for 600 MWh—an eight-hour delivery profile aimed at periods when renewable output is low and demand remains high.

That difference matters because a battery can earn value in several ways. It can respond quickly to frequency changes, shift energy from windy or sunny periods, support network stability and hold capacity for longer reliability events. The contracted service is not the same as emptying the entire facility at maximum power.

Tesla and UGL return for a repeat build

Tesla will supply storage technology, while UGL will handle engineering and construction work. The project is also expected to be among the first in Australia to use Tesla's newer Megablock approach. Standardized blocks can simplify the connection between battery enclosures, power electronics and site construction, although final performance still depends on controls, grid connection and commissioning.

Goyder will connect to ElectraNet's Bundey substation and sit within the broader Goyder Renewables Zone, which includes wind development. That location gives the battery a clear role: absorb or reposition renewable energy while providing firm capacity that the grid operator can call on. Site work for Stage 2 is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with operations expected in 2028.

A viral contract value needs a caveat

A widely shared post described Tesla's Megapack contract as worth $225 million. The source article linked in that thread confirms the stage size, contractors, capacity agreements and schedule, but it does not state that contract value. Public project and government materials reviewed here also did not provide a directly matching Tesla award figure. The amount should therefore remain attributed to the social report rather than presented as independently verified fact.

The verified project is substantial without the disputed number. Neoen says its Australian storage portfolio has reached 2.7 GW/9.1 GWh in operation or construction. Goyder's second stage shows how batteries are moving from one-off demonstrations to contracted capacity assets with multi-hour obligations.

For Tesla, that shift is the commercial point. Megapack demand is not only a function of renewable installations; it is increasingly tied to reliability markets that pay for energy to be available at specific times. Goyder Stage 2 adds scale, but the repeat customer and 15-year contracts may be the stronger signal. They give the asset a defined grid service and a long planning horizon, while repeat construction gives Neoen, Tesla and UGL another chance to reduce delivery risk through familiar hardware and working relationships.
