Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the all-electric GLA, bringing its smallest electric SUV into the company's familiar model family instead of treating it as a separate EQ experiment. U.S. deliveries are expected in the second half of 2027, with pricing to follow. The timing leaves room for details to change, but the opening specification already places the GLA in the heart of the premium compact-EV contest.

The leading version uses an 85-kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery and an 800-volt electrical architecture. Peak DC charging is listed at 320 kW, with roughly 140 miles of range added in ten minutes under favorable conditions. An estimated EPA range of about 350 miles has been discussed for the U.S.; until certification is complete, that number should be read as a target rather than a window-sticker result.
A compact SUV built around efficiency
Mercedes is pairing the battery with up to 349 horsepower and a claimed 0–60 mph time of 5.3 seconds. A drag coefficient of 0.27 is respectable for a small SUV, and the two-ton towing figure—about 4,400 pounds—suggests the company wants the GLA to feel useful rather than merely urban. The illuminated grille with 158 animated stars is less practical, but it makes the design instantly identifiable at night.
Charging is the specification that could matter most. A 320-kW peak does not mean the vehicle will hold that rate through an entire session, and real performance will depend on battery temperature, state of charge and the station. Even so, an 800-volt platform can reduce long-trip waiting when the car and charger reach their ideal conditions.
The cabin sells a different kind of luxury
Mercedes is also leaning into software. The GLA can be ordered with a passenger display, a Burmester 3D audio system with Dolby Atmos and integrated assistants based on ChatGPT and Google Gemini. An optional Sky Control roof can change transparency. None of those features replaces good ergonomics, but together they show where premium brands now look for differentiation after acceleration and range have become broadly competitive.
One social-media summary joked that the GLA "can't self-drive." The useful reading is less dramatic: buyers should separate driver assistance from autonomy claims and compare what is enabled in their market. A polished interface does not change the driver's legal responsibility.
