BYD has officially launched the new King DM-i in Mexico, giving the country’s plug-in hybrid sedan market a model with a claimed combined range of up to 1,680 kilometers under the NEDC cycle. The figure applies to the GS version and combines battery and gasoline operation; it is not an electric-only range rating. BYD’s Mexican product page lists up to 170 kilometers of NEDC electric range from a battery of up to 24.57 kWh.

A longer-range King built around DM 5.0

The central technical change is BYD’s fifth-generation Dual Mode plug-in hybrid system. The company pairs a high-efficiency 1.5-liter gasoline engine with its Blade Battery and electric drive components. The goal is to let drivers handle many daily trips on electricity while preserving the quick refueling and long-distance flexibility of a combustion engine for intercity travel.

That formula has particular relevance in Mexico. Public charging availability varies widely by region, and many buyers want lower fuel consumption without depending entirely on fast-charging coverage. A plug-in hybrid can bridge that gap, although its real benefit depends on frequent charging. Owners who rarely plug in carry the weight and cost of the battery without using as much of its electric capability.

The 1,680-kilometer claim needs context

NEDC is a laboratory test cycle and generally produces more optimistic range numbers than newer procedures or real driving. Speed, temperature, air conditioning, elevation, payload and driving style can all reduce both electric and combined range. BYD’s number is useful for comparing versions tested under the same method, but buyers should not treat it as a guaranteed distance between stops.

What is confirmed: the GS version is advertised with up to 1,680 km of combined NEDC range, while the vehicle’s electric-only NEDC range reaches up to 170 km. The two figures describe different operating modes and should not be combined or confused.

More than a powertrain update

BYD has also given the King a sportier exterior influenced by its Ocean Aesthetics design language. The Mexican product page highlights Level 2 driver-assistance features, while the launch event brought together more than 400 media representatives and partners. That turnout reflects the strategic importance of Mexico as Chinese automakers broaden their Latin American presence and challenge familiar sedan nameplates.

Why the launch matters

The new King DM-i is not a pure EV, but it competes for the same buyer who wants to reduce gasoline use and worries about charging access. Its large claimed range shifts the conversation from whether an electrified sedan can make a long trip to how often its owner will actually charge it. Pricing, warranty details, final equipment and independent efficiency tests will determine its value. Still, the launch gives Mexico another high-profile plug-in hybrid at a time when the market is moving beyond small urban EVs toward vehicles designed for both daily electric driving and long regional journeys.
