A Tesla Full Self-Driving endurance attempt crossed into California on July 26 with one Supercharger stop remaining, according to participant David Moss. Moss said he was traveling with Owen Sparks and Spencer, while Whole Mars Catalog provided live tracking through FSDCannonball.com.

“Autonomous Cannonball record is within reach.”

That is a compelling real-time signal, but it is not yet a verified record. Moss’s post documented the team passing California’s agricultural inspection station and nearing the traditional Los Angeles-area finish. It did not provide a final elapsed time, complete GPS log, charging record or full disengagement count. Until those pieces are published, the accurate description is a record attempt in its closing stage.

Why it matters

Cross-country drives expose driver-assistance software to a wider mix of conditions than a carefully selected urban demonstration. The car must manage interstates, interchanges, construction zones, variable speed limits, weather, darkness and repeated charging stops. For Tesla, the difficult part is not simply staying centered in a lane. It is maintaining consistent behavior for thousands of miles while a human supervisor remains ready to intervene.

Moss already has a documented long-distance history. Tesla published a customer story in March saying his Model 3 traveled more than 2,700 miles from California to South Carolina in two days and 20 hours using FSD (Supervised) with zero interventions. That company profile provides useful context, but the new Cannonball attempt is a different route, a different clock and potentially a different software build.

The benchmark is also moving quickly. A separate team led by Dan Burkland claimed a 49-hour, 55-minute westbound run in May using FSD v14.3.2 with no disengagements, including parking at charging stops. Contemporary coverage treated that time cautiously because continuous telemetry and video had not yet been fully reviewed. Moss’s team therefore has two jobs: arrive faster and document the run well enough for others to compare it.

A record is not the same as autonomy

The word “autonomous” is common in Cannonball shorthand, but Tesla’s consumer product remains Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla’s terms say the system requires active supervision, does not make the vehicle autonomous and leaves the driver responsible for safe operation. Three rotating human drivers completing a long trip is a demanding test of software and endurance; it is not a driverless trip.

It also matters how an intervention is defined. Touching the accelerator to match traffic, changing a navigation destination, handling a charger or moving within a parking lot can affect different record categories in different ways. A credible result should separate driving disengagements, navigation changes and charging-related actions instead of collapsing everything into one celebratory number.

Speed adds another complication. FSD’s performance on legal cross-country travel is different from the high-speed mythology surrounding traditional Cannonball runs. A supervised system following posted limits may reveal consistency and charging efficiency, but the lowest elapsed time can still depend heavily on traffic, weather, route choice and how long the crew spends at each charger.

What to watch at the finish

The next evidence should include the finish timestamp, start and end locations, total distance, software version, charging sessions and every moment when a human changed the car’s path or speed. A synchronized video and GPS trace would make the strongest case. If the team completes the run cleanly, it will be another meaningful demonstration of long-distance FSD consistency. The record, however, should be awarded to the data—not the post announcing that it was close.
