May 26th 2011 - London mayor Boris Johnson opened an electric charge network for electric cars today. London has added 150 new charge stations at once. In 2013 this network aims to include 1.300 charge stations.
The charge stations function on a subscription basis. For £100 a year, the car owner gets a card that enables him to charge his car at any of the charge stations of Source London. When purchasing a Nissan Leaf, one gets the subcription for free for a year. There were already charge stations of several providers in London, but not a uniform network spread out through the city. When the charge stations will have grown to 1300 in 2013, it will have surpassed the number of gas stations in London. Within 2 years, the aim is to have the East England region provided with a charge network as well.
Inhabitants of London are stimulated to buy electric cars by a subsidy project and an exemption of city congestion taxes. Currently, 2100 electric cars are registered for exemption. London has the most electric cars and charge stations in England at the moment. Mayor Johnson has the ambition to make London the epicenter of electric transport.
